There was further success for Abbey Grammar School student Stephen Begley when he won fIrst prize at the BA Science CREST fair, London.

BA CREST Awards accredit Creativity in Science and Technology. BA CREST is a nationally recognised project based scheme for students aged between 11-19. BA CREST awards enable students to develop their scientific curiosity as well as problem solving practical and communication skills for use in the 'real world' .

Under the direction of his Biology teacher Mrs 0. McGinley Stephen first submitted his project, entitled A study of the Antibiotic Properties of Lichens, at the BA CREST regional event held in Belfast in June 2003. In this competition Stephen took fIrst prize and was also awarded a special AstraZeneca A ward. In addition to these prizes Stephen was selected to represent Northern Ireland at the prestigious national BA CREST Science fair, London. Here Stephen competed against other regional winners from across the United Kingdom and took first prize - The Research Councils UK best Silver CREST project.
