Abbey Invites Its Past Pupils Back To Visit Their 'Alma Matter'

Mr Dermot McGovem, Headmaster discusses arrangements for inviting past pupils and past staff back to the Abbey Christian Brothers' Grammar School on Courtenay Hill on Saturday 7th November with five people that have given a lifetime to the Abbey as a pupil, teacher and presently still retain links with their' Alma Mater'

.Mr Val Kane was a pupil in the school from 1957 to 1964, a member of the teaching staff . from 1968 to 2006 and presently has a role co-ordinating the new school. Mr Killian Higgins was a pupil in the Abbey Grammar from 1952 to 1959, a member of the teaching staff from 1966 to 1997 and is presently the study hall supervisor. Mr Patrick Mooney was a pupil at the school and presently supports pupils in the school with literacy needs.

Mr Maurice McKevitt was a pupil from 1963 to 1970, a member of staff from 1973 to 2005 and is presently the Irish Department language Assistant. Mr Aidan O'Rourke was a pupil at the school from 1960 to 1967 and is still a member of the teaching staff, having started in 1971.

Past pupils and past members of staff are invited back to tour their 'old school' on Saturday 7th November between 10.00am and 1.00pm, before the doors are finally locked as the Abbey move to their 'state of the art' new school at Castleowen on the Ashgrove Road.

Visitors shall have a chance of walking the corridors and viewing photographs on the walls, as well as sitting at their old desks in a variety of classrooms. Past pupils shall also have an opportunity to talk to their teachers and discuss events from a bye gone era.

Attendance Rolls shall be available to view and past pupils have a great opportunity of meeting up with classmates that they haven't seen for years. Refreshments shall be available.
