Teenagers from the Abbey Grammar School in Newry were today served up a hard-hitting road safety message by the police and Fire Service. Constable Warren Todd from the PSNI's community police team showed over 120 16 and 17-year-olds a written-off car as part of an address on the dangers of speeding and drink-driving.

The issues were highlighted by explaining the driving licence points system and figures for the amount of fatalities and serious injuries for Northern Ireland and especially the Newry area.

A police spokesman said: "It is hoped that this event will make young people stop and think about the seriousness of safety when driving and the consequences of taking a risk on the road."

Rory Dumigan, Fire Service liaison officer, also addressed the teenagers regarding attending serious accidents.
