Abbey Chess Club Checks Out The Opposition

Pupils from the Abbey Chess Club, Stephen Begley, Philip McClory , Kevin Holsgrove, Christy Carr, Joseph Begley, and Darren Dullaghan who recently qualified for the British Land Chess Megafinals in Belfast, (not included in the picture Rory O'Rorke). Philip McClory (centre) won the under 14 section of the N Ireland finals and qualified for the National GigaFinals is seen playing the teacher in charge of the Chess Club Mr Gamble. Also included is Paul Cable a parent and an accomplished chess player who coaches the pupils.

The Chess Club has had a very good year, and now meets twice a week. The numbers playing have increased and the members have played in both internal school and regional competitions.

Next year the club has been invited to play in a school league in the Greater Belfast Area, and will take part in more regional tournaments. As a number of staff play chess a staff / pupil challenge has been planned for the beginning of next term.
