I joined the chess club this year, so far it has been great fun. I have met new people outside my form class and outside my year and have made new friends.

I learnt how to play chess from my dad, and although there was no chess club at my primary school, there were a couple of boards and we sometimes played during our spare time. I was therefore glad to hear that the Abbey had a Chess Club. However I think it doesn’t really matter how long you have been playing if at all, you can learn pretty quickly just by coming along and taking part.

I was part of the Junior Chess Team (up to 3rd years) that recently played against St Columb’s Derry. I was up against a 2nd year pupil, and started well but about halfway through the match I made a mistake and lost my queen, that was the beginning of the end, but I enjoyed the experience.

I know more matches are planned later this year some being away, so I’m looking forward to travelling away with the school.

Basically I have enjoyed the club and would recommend others to come along on a Tuesday from 3:20 to 4:30.
