The Abbey's Technology Club its naturally delighted at the outstanding success of
their pupils at the recent exhibition which was held in the Odyssey on the 12th and 13th of June.
The Technology Club had a total often pupils competing at the exhibition and all of
our pupils brought home awards to the Abbey. Their biggest achievements included
the following:
Christopher McParland and Shane Fegan attained an Award to attend the British
Youth Science Fair in London in 2004 with their 'Water for Life' project. They also
scooped first place in the senior ( 17 -19 years) group category .These pupils
identified the problem of availability of hygienic drinking water in the Third World.
The pupils developed a product that uses renewable energy to produce safe drinking
water for use in Zambia.
Connor Jackson, Andrew Marshall and Ciaran Leonard won first place in the
intermediate (15- 16 years) group project with 'sense-a-spill'. These pupils developed
a product to assist the visually impaired to determine the volume of boiling water in any given contamer.
Peter McClean achieved first place in the Junior (11 -14 years) individual category
with his project' Autism Aid' he developed an electronic learning aid for children
with autism. Mark McCavitt completePaul Rafferty and Conor Murphy won the third from four awards available irr the
junior category with the runner up title in the group (11 -14 years) with 'Dozy-
Driver' The pupils designed a device that tackles the very real problem of a motorist
falling asleep behind the wheel of their car .
At the end of the ceremony the Chairman of the Board of Judges commented on the ;;
innovation and creativity of the Abbey pupils and added 'The rewards received were ~
recognition of all their hard work.
