MacRory Cup Quarter Final Replay - Abbey CBS V Dungannon

Abbey CBS, Newry 1-16 St. Patrick's Dungannon 2-12

The quarter-final replay in Monaghan Harps between Abbey CBS and St. Patrick's Dungannon saw the other Tyrone side bow out of this year's competition - but not before the large crowd was treated to one of the great MacRory Cup ties. Over thirty scores, some super moves, some great goals, including Conor Bayne equalizer four minutes into injury time and a clear indication that the Abbey could well mount a challenge for the crown they last held in 1987.

However their chances in next Saturday's semi-final could have been dealt a severe blow with captain and Down minor Kevin McKernan stretchered off to Cavan General Hospital five minutes into the second half. Dungannon's Blaine Kilgannon was also taken off to hospital and the frenetic momentum of the game continued - but the Abbey needs McKernan just as much as last year's Armagh minor captain Kevin Dyas who had a superb game for the Newry side.

He was involved in well over half the scores taken by his side, including setting McKernan up for a classy goal in the fifth minute. That was the difference between the teams at the break (1-4 to 0-4), but the Academy were never really out of touch and they eventually drew level 1-8 each when Tiarnán O'Hagan found the net in the 51st minute.

Abbey responded with points from both corner-forwards and half-back Darren Rowland - but Conor Bayne closed it to 1-11 to 1-10. Dyas and Rowland seemed to have put Abbey through, but Bayne side-footed a superb goal deep into injury time to set up the extra-time. There was little to separate the sides over the 20 extra minutes played - but Abbey sub Ruairí Gillen managed just that with time running out to edge his side home.

Abbey CBS : Kevin McKernan 1-1, Kevin Dyas 0-5, Ruairí Cunningham 0-4, Darren Rowland 0-2, Niall Devlin 0-2, Daniel Clarke 0-1, Ruairí Gillen 0-1.

St. Patrick's Dungannon : Conor Bayne 1-5, Tiarnán O'Hagan 1-4, Stefan Forker 0-1, Brian Toner 0-1, Ryan Pickering 0-1.
