The Northern Ireland Fire Brigade has launched its Arson Awareness programme for secondary schools at Abbey Grammar school in Newry. The programme is part of the Fire Brigade’s new Integrated Risk Management Plan and aims to raise the level of arson awareness in secondary schools right across the Province. Arson is a growing problem in Northern Ireland schools with a total of 86 schools having been attacked to date over the past three years.

A roadshow of arson talks will be delivered by the Northern Ireland Fire Brigade in secondary schools across the province and the use of SMART WATER technology will also be demonstrated. The Fire Brigade have been working in partnership with schools and education boards to drive down arson and SMART WATER is one way in which schools can protect themselves as the perpetrator is sprayed and can be later identified using an ultraviolet light scanner.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Peter Craig, Head of Community Development at the Northern Ireland Fire Brigade said –

“The partnership approach to preventing fire related incidents is the way forward in Northern Ireland and we work closely with the PSNI, other emergency services, schools, education boards, the business community, ethnic minority groups and community leaders. Indeed the Northern Ireland Fire Brigade’s Arson Strategy, is based on Prevention, Education, Detection and Investigation through working in partnership with other key agencies and local communities themselves.
