Abbey Pupils Excel In Chess Championships

Pictured above are Abbey Grammar CBS pupils, who took part in the , recent N. Ireland School Chess Finals in Belfast. They are Eamon Sloan, Stephen Mullan, Kevin Holsgrove, Joseph Begley, Mark Docherty and Stephen Begley; also pictured are teacher in charge, Mr C Gamble and Abbey Parent and Chess Coach, Paul Cable. All of the finalists had , qualified through the school chess club. This club is running twice a week after school and has an enthusiastic and keen membership.

The finals in Belfast proved to be a very successful day for the Abbey pupils, with all students performing well. Each pupil played 5 games in a league system. Stephen Begley, who did not lose a game, and Marc Docherty won the Under 17 and Under 16 sections respectively. As well as receiving their trophies they now also gain qualification to the UK finals in Manchester in July.
