The Abbey Grammar advanced into the third round of the All Ireland Schools Quiz 2002/2003 after a closely fought second round match agains St. Louis' Ballymena and Scoil Dara, Kildare held in Monaghan on Wednesday 22nd January.

The Abbey and St. Louis both started strongly and were level after the first round. The scores stayed even in the folowing rounds but eventually the Abbey managed to creep ahead, giving the Newry team a huge psychological advantage. They began to pull away slowly from the team from Ballymena and going into the final round, they had an eight point lead.

The determination of the St. Louis' shone through in the end and they closed the gap, but not significantly enough to overtake the Abbey, who ended up winning by a margin of just four points.

The team consisting of Peadar Coyle, the captain Colm O'Grady, David McEntaggart and Paul Matthews were elated by the impressive yet narrow victory and our best wishes go to the team in preparation for the next round which will be held later this year.
