Abbey pupils are Young Consumers of the year

A team of teenagers from Abbey Grammar School, Newry, are the winners of this year's Young Consumers' Competition. Colm O'Grady, Kevin Waddell and Paul White fought off tough competition to take first prize.

Along with individual prizes, the winners scooped £500 for the school and a silver trophy.

The quiz is jointly organised by the Consumer Council and the Trading Standards Service of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment and is designed to increase Consumer awareness among young people.

Alongside the traditional quiz, the Young Consumers Competition includes a project element. The project was sponsored by the Food Standards Agency for Northern Ireland and the aim was to design a newsletter based on consumer and banking issues. Cool Fm DJ Sonya Mac, presented Lagan College, Belfast with the top prize in this section.

Steve Costello, Chairman of the General Consumer Council said, "The Young Consumers Competition gets bigger and better every year and the competition is getting tougher. The teams involved in this year's competition are to be congratulated for their efforts. We are delighted by the enthusiasm and commitment shown by the pupils and their teachers."

Steve Stillwell, Schools Policy Specialist of Financial Services Agency added, "There are no losers in this competition. All the young . people involved now have greater consumer awareness tohelp them make sensible and in formed choices in an increasingly complex marketplace."

The final took place at Lagan Valley Island Centre in Lisburn on March 4. Linda McAuley from On Your Behalf, the BBC Radio consumer programme, asked the questions.
