For the second time in three years the news reached the school that the Ashbourne Shield was awarded to the GCSE and A level students of the Abbey Grammar for the most fluent spoken Irish in the 6 counties.

Having won previously in 2001 it was not expected that the school could repeat the success in the fierce competition for this coveted honour so soon again. There have been several explanations for the victory. Sarah Murphy our Irish Language Assistant 2003-2004 claims to have played no small part in the achievement.

Willy Mc Cullough the caretaker/janitor insists that he made a favourable impression on the visiting examiner when he greeted her with ‘Maidin mhaith, cad é mar atá tú’ in the school foyer. An Máistir Mac Ruairí explains that his presence was the decisive factor despite his having arrived in the school after the inspection occurred.

Meanwhile the ‘oul dog for the hard road’ Mr. Mc Kevitt who actually teaches 97% of the students who won the award goes about his daily chores as humble and unassuming as ever!
