My FirstYear In The Abbey

John Corless

The first day I came to the Abbey Grammar School in Newry, I was worried that I was not going to be in the same class as my friends, from my old primary school, but luckily all the other six people got into the same class as me - Breffini one. People had told me many stories about the school and they were all everything but good before I actually had been accepted into the school.

The first month I was in the school I got to know the teachers and how well behaved you had to be. In my Christmas tests I did all right but I hope to do better in my summer exams by doing more revision. The work is very different than in Primary school because you have to concentrate on many different subjects.(twelve altogether).I have got to know most of the people in my class and am friendly with them. In first year I haven`t got much homework but I hear you get more as the years go along.

At the start of the year we went to the Water front Hall to see a pantomime which was boring but a lot more fun than a day of work in school. I also went on the school trip to London where we went to Wembley, Hamley`s toy store and many other great events including two musicals. My favourite subjects are PE where we usually play gaelic football on the pitch or soccer in Newry Hockey pitch. I also like drama because we don`t do much acting we just have good fun. One subject I liked at the start of the year was Geography but I find it very boring now that we have switched teachers.

Overall, I think you have to work very hard in the Abbey to do well but you do have some good times in it.
