This award commemorates the life and work in the field of Irish Studies of Brother W. O Murphy during his long and distinguished career in the Abbey.

Information & Communication Technology (ICT): Patrick McGuigan

The Br. D.W. Lynam Award

This award celebrates the work of an outstanding Mathematician who saw the beginning of the Computer revolution in the Abbey school during his term as Headmaster in the 1970's. His long period of service in Newry saw numerous students benefit greatly from his logical and enquiring mind.

French: Patrick McGuigan

The Brendan Cassidy Award

Brendan Cassidy was a popular and dedicated teacher who served Abbey students for almost twenty years in the 1950's and 60's. As Head of the French Department he displayed a dedication and thoroughness to the teaching of his subject which was inspirational to his students.

Further Mathematics: Patrick McGuigan

The Bro J.V. Mullins Award

Bro J.V. Mullins served a lobg period in The Abbey in the 1950s and 60s both as a dedicated mathematics teacher and as Headmaster. He will always be remembered by his students as a warm and caring teacher who was able to get the best from his students.

Mathematics: Brendan Murtagh

The P.A. Sweeney Award

The name of Paddy Sweeney was synonymous with the teaching of Mathematics in the Abbey in the 1940', 50's and 60's. He took such great enjoyment in solving problems and so conveyed this to his students that many were inspired to follow his footsteps.

Business Studies: Brendan Murtagh

The Br. J.B. Hynes Award

This award commemorates the life of Brother J.B. Hynes. During his teaching career in the Abbey in the 1960's and 70's, he was a popular figure whose grasp of business affairs and fundraising was remarkable. His humerous approach to teaching colleagues and his pupils made him a popular friend to all who worked with him.

Geography: Brendan Murtagh

The Br. H.C. O'Hara Award

This award is dedicated to the memory of a gentle and caring teacher who after his return from a period of time in India served the largest part of his teaching career in the Abbey where his many pupils recall him with warmth and devotion.

Economics: David Matthews

The P.J. Kane Award

This award is dedicated to the memory of P.J. Kane a distinguished past teacher. P.J. introduced Economics to the Abbey and during his teaching career he inspired both staff and pupils with his courage and dedication.

Politics: Rory Mulvaney

The Br. D.L. O'Donnell Award

This award commemorates the life and work of Brother D.L. O'Donnell who had an abiding interest and knowledge of political affairs in Ireland. He had an exceptionally long connection with the Abbey Grammar School where he celebrated his centenary in 1998.

History: Calvin McGrath

The Br. P.W. Newell Award

Brother P.W. Newell was a legend in the Abbey where he served as a teacher and as a Headmaster during the 1930's, 40's, 50's and 60's. As a Historian, his attention to detail was remarkable and as Headmaster he was responsible for the planning and building of the present school which was opened in 1966.

English: Tony Quigg

The Br. T. L. Magee Award

Brother T.L. Magee will always be remembered in the Abbey as an excellent Headmaster and as an inspiratlonal teacher of English. A gentle Kerryman he was as big in heart as in stature.

Physics: John Brogan

The Br. M.K. Farrell Award

Brother M.K. Farrell was a popular and caring teacher in the Abbey in the 1960's and 70's. His work in the Physics Lab was matched by his enthusiasm on the playing fields and he made a lasting impression in the lives of many Abbey students.

Chemistry: Gareth Rooney

The Professor L. Abrahamson Award

This award commemorates Leonard Abrahamson, a graduate from the Abbey in the early 1900's who later became President of the Royal College of Physicians.

Art: Fearghal Murray

The Br. T.F. Beausang Award

Brother Beausang has perhaps the longest period of service in the Newry school where his love of Language and Art has widened the minds of generations of Abbey students and his creative talents has acted as a spur to literally thousands of students who have benefited from his teachings.

Biology: Colum Lynchehaun

The Dr. M. Abrahamson Award

This award commemorates Mervyn Abrahamson who graduated from the Abbey in the early 1900's and who later became an eminent Physician in London.

Irish: Tony Quigg

The P.A. Crinion Award

Paddy Crinion was a distinguished member of the Abbey staff for the three decades in the 1940's, 50,s and 60's. A recognised expert in Latin he was equally gifted in Irish and during his time in Newry was involved in all aspects of Irish Culture and Language.

Physical Education Studies: Patrick Donnolly

The Br. P.C. McFarland Award

This award is dedicated to the memory of Brother P. McFarland and his enthusiastic approach to the teaching of English but more appropiatley to his love of Gaelic games. He will long be remembered as a colossus of the Abbey playing fields where he displayed a drive for success that will be long remembered by legions of Abbey sportsmen.

Religious Studies: Conor Murphy

The Br. W A. Byrne Award

Brother W.A. Byrne is one of those Abbey legends, a man of rare vivacity and enthusiasm. During his prolonged period of service in the school he was a shining example of the religious calling of Brother Edmund Rice. His attention to the disadvantaged in society and especially to the African Foreign Missions was unequalled.

Sociology: Sean Mulvaney

The Br. J. D. McDonald Award

This award celebrates the work carried out by the last Christian Brother who served as Headmaster in the Abbey Grammar School. His period of office is memorable for the quality and extent of change he originated. Many new ideas and subjects were introduced into the school during his time enriching the quality and variation of education offered to the students.

Spanish: Michael Kennedy

The Jack Cushnan Award

This award commemorates the work in the Abbey of Jack Cushnan who as Head of the Spanish Department in the 1960's and 70's saw his subject achieve new status in the school curriculum. When he left the school he became Headmaster of the the British Council Schools in Cali, Columbia and Madrid, Spain.

Technology: John Gribben

The Br. C.l. Gallagher Award

This award is dedicated to the long service in the Abbey of Brother C.l. Gallagher in the 1960's and 1970's. During his career both as a teacher and a Headmaster in the School he had a consuming passion for scientific and technological developments, a passion which he used to modernise the schools for the benefit of his students.

Theatre Studies: Gerard Ryan

The Br. I.M. Liston Award

This award celebrates the distinguished teaching career of Brother I. Liston. For over 53 years in Newry Brother Liston conveyed to thousands of Abbey students an awareness and appreciation of English Literature, Poetry and dramatic expression.

The John Grant Memorial Award:Patrick Donnelly

This award is presented to the student who has made the biggest contribution to Gaelic Football during the last school year and commemorates John Grant ‘ a gentle giant’ and an outstanding member of the 1974 MacRory Cup Team who died suddenly and tragically following his recovery form a serious car accident.

Head Boy Award:Feargal Murray


This award goes to Fergal Murray to recognise his role of student leadership throughout the last academic year. During his period of office Feargal created his own piece of history by becoming the first Abbey Head Boy to address his contemporaries and their parents at a Prize Giving Ceremony.

Abbey Sports Association Award: Kevin McGuigan

This award is made by the Abbey Sports Association, a group of past pupils who were formed to recognise the huge contribution made by past and present pupils of the school in the area of sport. The presentation of this award will be made by Mr Sean McGuigan.

These valuable Bursaries are given each year by the Headmaster to recognise the huge contribution made by a large number of pupils to the life of the school in the field of extra – curricular activities. Each year the relevant Head of Department in consultation with his/her teaching colleagues nominates a number of candidates for these awards. The Gerry Brown Memorial Trophy

This trophy which accompanies the Bursary Award was presented to the school by Mrs. Alma Brown in memory of her late husband, Gerry Brown who taught Physical Education in the Abbey from 1949-1982.

Special Presentation Best in Modern Languages at ‘A’ Level

The Christine Fitzsimmons Trophy Tony Quigg
This inaugural award is presented to the pupil who achieved the highest marks across the range of Modern Languages at ‘A’ Level. The trophy awarded is being donated to night by our guest speaker Mr. Tom Kelly and will be presented by Mrs. Christine Fitzsimmons.
The award seeks to recognise the outstanding contributions in the field of Modern Languages made by Mrs. Fitzsimmons during her teaching career in the Abbey 1968 - 1983 and is a fitting recognition of the high esteem held by her past pupils of the work done by Mrs. Fitzsimmons in and out of her classroom.
