Achievement Prize Giving - 23rd September 2005

Guest Speaker at the Achievement Prizegiving Ceremony at the Abbey Christian Brothers' Grammar School, Mr. Barry Turley congratulates the pupils that went to Zambia as part of the Zambian Immersion Project last March. The eight pupils and three staff were involved in teaching and building projects as well as visiting patients in the local hospitals and on day care visits. Also  included is Mr. Dermot McGovem, Headmaster and Mr. Mark Grogan, one of the teachers that travelled with the group. Missing from the photograph is Mark McGuigan.

Four pupils that are part of the County Down Minor Football Panel and are presently
attending the Abbey Christian Brothers' Grammar School are wished 'all the best' in
their quest for All Ireland honours against Mayo at Croke Park on Sunday at the
school's Achievement Prizegiving Ceremony by Mr. Barry Turley, Guest Speaker and
Mr. Dermot McGovem, Headmaster. Included are Colm Murney, Cathal Magee,
Kevin McKernan and Seamus Grant.

The Second Year team that won The All Ireland Edmund Rice Cross Country
Championships in Dublin in May were congratulated by Mr. Barry Turley, Guest
Speaker and Mr. Dermot McGovem, Headmaster at the Achievement Prizegiving
Ceremony in the Abbey Christian Brothers' Grammar School. Included are Niall
McCartan, David Hudson, Ryan Hudson, Niall Daly and Andrew Fitzsimmons.

Lower Sixth pupil Kevin O'Reilly from Bessbrook is congratulated on his outstanding
success in the June examinations by Mr. Barry Turley, Guest Speaker and Mr. Dermot
McGovem, Headmaster at the Achievement Prizegiving Ceremony in the Abbey
Christian Brothers' Grammar School; Kevin achieved 11 A * grades at GCSE and
even though he was only a fifth year pupil he also obtained a grade A in A-level
Mathematics.

Abbey Christian Brothers’ Grammar 1980 – 1987 ‘A’ Levels – English, History, Computer Studies University of Ulster – BA in Politics & English Queen’s University Belfast – MA in Irish Politics

Barry has three years’ experience as Communications Director for the SDLP, two years with Northern Ireland’s top public affairs consultancy, and six years as a broadcaster for BBC and RTE, including experience as a reporter and studio producer for current affairs flagship programmes Good Morning Ulster and Morning Ireland.

He has first hand experience of devolved government, running the SDLP press operation during the first term of the Northern Ireland Assembly, advising two Deputy First Ministers, and Ministers for Employment and Learning, Finance and Agriculture. Barry also worked closely with senior civil servants and the government press service, establishing media strategies, developing policy themes and planning major events, such as the devolution of power from Westminster, and Ministerial visits to Washington, Boston and New York.

As senior consultant with a Belfast based public affairs and political lobbying company, Barry developed media strategies, advised on crisis management issues, designed public affairs and lobbying programmes and carried out a series of bespoke projects such as stakeholder reviews on behalf of clients as diverse as the Arts Council, and the Confederation of Health and Social Services.

An accomplished broadcaster, writer and PR consultant, he has a comprehensive roster of contacts from all levels of Government, media, NGOs and business, both North and South of the border. He also has high level contacts within each of the political parties, North and South, right across the political spectrum.

As a journalist, he has been a producer on RTE’s flagship morning current affairs programme Morning Ireland, as well as a presenter of political affairs programmes on RTE. He also worked as a reporter on BBC Radio Ulster’s Good Morning Ulster, as well as working for BBC Radio Four’s World Tonight, and a range of programmes on BBC Radio 5 Live and Radio Four. He has written for publications as diverse as the Observer, the Irish Times and the Washington Post.

Achievement Awards

The Abbey Christian Brothers’ takes great pride in the range of extra-curricular activities which it offers to our pupils. This extra-curricular programme is only possible through the dedicated voluntary efforts of our teaching staff who are represented by a number of Department Heads on the stage to-day.

These awards seek to recognise the diverse talents of all our pupils who achieved a high level of performance during the last school year while representing their school, their clubs and their counties at county, provincial and national level and the categories range through a wide variety of activities in sport, recreation and leisure.
