Switzerland - Visit

On Wednesday 24th October 2001 the Geography Department of the Abbey Grammar School- 40 pupils and 4 teachers, set sail for an alpine experience of Switzerland. They stayed in a small picturesque Alpine village Les Diablerets which nestles below nestles below the 3,210 metre mountain of the same name.

Their first excursion while in Switzerland was an industrial vist to the Nestle factory in Broc. The pupils were able to breathe in chocolate "fumes" for the duration of the vist and also enjoy a tasting session of many types of chocolate. Yum!

The pupils then paid a vist to the United Nations in Geneva, they were impressed by the activities and ambience of the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

On Saturday 27th October the pupils took part in a River Ramble of the Grande Eau, they were able to see how the river was staightened by human activity. They also gained practical fieldwork skills by measuring the river velocity, the wetted perimeter and also the river width and depth.

A trip to Switzerland would not be complete without a vist to a Glacier. On Sunday 28th October the pupils visted Glacier des Diablerets 3000m. This imressive glacier was reached by cable car and the view of the surrounding landscape and landforms is one pupils will never forget.

On Monday 29th October the pupils and teachers began their journey home- it really was a an amazing Alpine experience.
