ULSTER SPORTS TRUST AWARDS PRESENTATION

2006 SCHOOL LEAVER AWARDS

In Association with

THE SPORTS COUNCIL NORTHERN IRELAND

Seven outstanding young sports persons were recognised when they were presented with Ulster Sports Trust School Leaver Awards. These awards were presented to Erin Kerry (Badminton) Wallace High School Lisburn, Greg Thompson (Cricket) Friends School Lisburn, Kevin Dyas (Gaelic Football) Abbey Christian Brothers Newry, James Hayhurst and Trevor McKnight (Rowing)

The awards are towards the costs of additional training and competition and will help the recipients, some of the Province’s brightest young sporting prospects, to overcome the many hurdles in moving from excellence in school or junior based sport into the world of adult sport.

The Awards for 2006 were sponsored by the Sports Council Northern Ireland. Eamonn McCartan, Chief Executive SCNI, commented: “ The Sports Council are delighted to be associated with the Award Scheme which encourages talented young school leavers to continue to strive for excellence in their chosen sports. I commend the work of the Trust and wish the recipients continued success in their sports and future careers.”

Speaking at the award ceremony, Dame Mary Peters DBE, President of the Trust said "Leaving school marks an important transition in a young person’s life, bringing with it the need to review personal development as a new phase begins. The same is true as regards your chosen sports and the Sports Trust, through these awards recognises the difficulties in making this transition.

The Trust wished them well and sincerely hope Ulster Sport, and Ulster, benefit from their endeavours."
