About The School

The Abbey Christian Brothers Grammar School is a Roman Catholic Grammar school located in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland. The school was founded by the Christian Brothers of Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice.

It has a strong academic as well as sporting tradition having won the MacRory and Hogan cups in 2006. The school also contributes to the arts having also produced "West Side Story" in Newry City Hall. It moved from its original site in Chapel Street, Newry, in 1968 and is currently situated on Courtney Hill, Newry

History

The Abbey CBS was founded in Castle Street in Newry in the late 19th Century. In 1966 a new school building was opened at Courtney Hill in the city where it has been based ever since. Construction on a new building will commence in late 2007 on a green field site close to other local schools on the Rathfriland Road approx. 3 miles from the current site.

In Gaelic Athletic Association the school has won the Macrory Cup on six occasions, the latest being in 2006 and the All-Ireland counterpart competition The Hogan Cup once, also in 2006.
