Edmund Rice Voluntary Service Programme

Voluntary Group 2007

A new International Voluntary Service Programme for 18-25 year olds was successfully launched, as part of Edmund Rice Centre's youth ministry.

The programme aims to give 18-25 year olds who have had previous experience of Edmund Rice Camps and/or the Developing World Immersion Programme a chance to deepen their experience.

Eight young people from across Ireland were selected to take part. They have worked in placements in their own local areas and visited Lusaka in Zambia for 3 weeks - July/ August '07.

This programme is being organised in conjunction with the International Spirituality Centre in Lusaka, where the volunteers are presently staying during their visit. The programme also involves workshops which give them a chance to reflect on the reasons behind the poverty and marginalisation they encounter and also to explore any questions in relation to their faith that may surface.

The photograph above shows the group of young people who have travelled to Zambia as volunteers. Included are Abbey ex-students Richard Gilmore and Darren Rowland who travelled to Lusaka in August along with teacher, Mr Mark Grogan.
